I've used both 3.0 and 4.0. Usually they were on the same machine,
but not always.

Try using ms query or something else like that to run some queries
and see what the response time is like. I'm still thinking you have
ODBC loggin on, or a connection problem. You can not use isql_w or
EM to test, as they don't use ODBC.
